The Children
Lyric Hammersmith
A decade on from its first outing, Lucy Kirkwood's The Children finds two people in a state of maintained routine. Living in the shadow of a radiation zone, Hazel and Robin have built a life around small rituals - yoga, parsnip wine, the daily rhythms that hold things steady. When Rose, an old friend, arrives at the door, she brings the weight of the past and a question neither of them expected.
It's fundamentally about what we owe each other across time. Meera Syal - whose work in Noises Off and A Tupperware of Ashes showed her gift for holding difficult emotional spaces - plays Hazel, a woman trying to preserve a version of herself that's already shifting. Kirkwood writes this with a dark humour that feels honest rather than clever. The play sits with the contradiction of wanting to keep things as they are while knowing you can't.
This is theatre that doesn't announce itself. It trusts the work to happen between you and the stage.
