Richmond sits where London stops feeling like London. The Thames slows down here, the park runs wild with deer, and the high street still has the feel of a market town that got swallowed by the city rather than built for it.

Most people come for the outdoors first. Richmond Park is the obvious draw, big enough that you can walk for hours and not see the same view twice, but the towpath along the river is just as good for an evening out, especially between Richmond Bridge and Petersham. Kew is a short walk south if you want gardens instead of parkland.

The town itself rewards a slow afternoon. Narrow lanes off the main road hide pubs that have been open for centuries, small galleries, and a theatre that pulls in a proper crowd. Richmond Theatre and the Orange Tree both run consistently strong programmes, and the riverside bars fill up fast on any evening with decent weather.

Timing matters more here than in central London. Weekends bring walkers, families and day-trippers, so the park and towpath get busy from late morning. Weekday evenings are quieter and often better if you want a pub table or a walk without the crowds. Most events cluster around evenings and weekends, same as anywhere else, but Richmond's pace stays unhurried even when it's full.

Getting here is easy, on the District line and with mainline trains from Waterloo, which is part of why it works as a half-day trip rather than a full expedition. Bring layers if you're doing the park, and book ahead for anything at the theatre if you've got a specific date in mind.
