London has more pubs with live music than most cities have music venues. That is partly history, partly licensing, partly the fact that a good landlord with a back room and a PA has always been a more reliable booking agent than anyone with a contract. The pub circuit is where most of the city's working musicians actually play.

The areas worth knowing: Kentish Town and Tufnell Park carry a lot of the rock and indie weight, with several long-running rooms that still book five nights a week. Islington has a cluster of folk and acoustic nights, some of them running for decades without much fanfare. Brixton and Peckham lean toward reggae, afrobeat, and soul. Dalston fills in the gaps with anything harder to categorise.

What separates a good music pub from a bad one is usually the sound. A room where you can hear the words and still hold a conversation at the bar is worth travelling for. Ask locals: word of mouth still moves faster than algorithms in this part of London's culture.

Timing matters in a practical sense. Sunday afternoons and early Sunday evenings are consistently strong for acoustic sessions and jazz. Thursday through Saturday nights are when the bigger rooms programme properly. Mondays and Tuesdays tend to run open mics, which range from quietly excellent to deeply earnest, depending on the venue and the night.

Entry prices vary widely. Plenty of pub gigs are free with a drink; others charge a few pounds on the door. The ticketed nights tend to be the ones with a touring act or a name band passing through. If you are not sure what you are walking into, the venue's own listings page usually tells you.
