This is about a composer trying to survive a dictatorship without losing himself. Shostakovich had to balance staying alive with refusing to become purely propaganda. The play finds dark humour in that bind: how does anyone resist a regime that controls everything, right down to the notes you're allowed to write.
Adler and Sellers' writing (directed by Fahy) tracks someone constantly calculating what's safe, what's hidden, what might give them away. It's tightly wound. If politics and art interest you, or you just want intelligent theatre with real stakes, this is worth your time.
The claustrophobia builds as you watch. That's where the power lies.
