Its owners have long claimed there has been a licensed building on the site since 1337. Today the pub is run by Urban Pubs & Bars and serves a menu of classic British and Spanish-inspired dishes, from sharing plates to paella.
Above the pub is Upstairs at the Gatehouse, an award-winning Off West End theatre that has staged musicals, plays and opera in its 122-seat Victorian auditorium since 1997. The room opened in 1895 as Highgate Hall and has served over the years as a music hall, cinema, Masonic lodge and a jazz and folk club that once hosted Paul Simon. Entry to the theatre is through the pub.
