Joshua Harmon writes about family the way it actually happens. Funny, brutal, specific. This play comes from his New York childhood, tracing his relationship with his grandmother and mother through thirty years of secrets, fights, and love that makes no obvious sense. Director Josh Seymour makes his Hampstead Theatre debut here.

If you want theatre that doesn't smooth over the rough edges of feeling, this is it. Harmon's got form: Bad Jews and Prayer for the French Republic both played to packed houses. This mines his own family story and ends up feeling both specific and universal. The kind of play that sticks with you because it won't hand you easy answers.
